PORTLAND GUITAR REPAIR is a specialized stringed instrument repair shop in the Montavilla neighborhood of Portland Oregon. James Hingston spent seven years working under Frank Ford in the repair department at Gryphon Stringed Instruments in California, one of the top repair and retail shops in the country. Gaining experience in all types of repair of the guitar, bass, mandolin, ukulele, and banjo families, Portland Guitar Repair strives to bring this quality of craft and service to the city of Portland.

I was trained by some of the most renown artisans in the field. I was lucky enough to overlap with Frank and work right next to him at Gryphon for years! Frets.com was so helpful for me when I started tinkering with instruments as a teenager, and is an immensely useful reference to this day. He was an amazing repairman and teacher. And a really good friend.
I was hired on at Gryphon by Brian, who has for a long time been the manager of repairs. He taught me so many things and singlehandedly set me on the path I’m on. He builds amazing guitars and is my big bro. He carries on Frank’s legacy. Also, we were in a cool band together!
